Here is my submission for Cinema Makeup School’s The Next Level of Cosplay scholarship! Abe Sapien from the Hellboy series!

Video transcript:

Hello Cinema Makeup School! My name is Lexi Gilbert, I’m 24 years old and I’m from the UK.
This is Abe Sapien, and he is my entry for ‘The Next Level Of Cosplay’ scholarship at Cinema Makeup School.

Abe Sapien has always been one of my favourite character makeups, and I’ve always wanted to cosplay him. The face was sculpted onto a fibreglass lifecast of myself and then moulded in fibreglass ran with foam latex. The latex bald cap was handmade and both pieces were handpainted and blended together before applying to make the self application easier.
The whole costume is made from household materials; the neck brace is made from a yoga mat and a chinese paper lantern, the breathing tube is made from insulation pipes, hamster tubes, bottles, LED torches, door hooks and blue cellophane, and it has water inside and can be illuminated. The bodysuit and accessories are modified with craft foam, bottle caps and 3D paint.
He was completed in a total 30 days between 20th March to the 11th of April. The reason I entered so late is because I had financial trouble and I wanted to go all out with no limitations and make something that I would be really proud of. Luckily I worked it out and I’m really pleased with the final result. I just would like to point out the eyes as they are made using a really funny method I used before. I discovered by accident that the packaging from a chocolate orange box has these oval clear plastic shapes inside that make perfect alien eye shapes, I cut out them out from the packaging and painted them for the eyes.

It is my dream to become a special effects makeup artist.
Getting into cosplay 5 years ago is how I discovered my passion for creating character makeups and prosthetics. I started off with using just eyeshadows and liquid latex to create my first cosplays, and then I went on to learn from books, websites, tutorials and practised with anything i could get my hands on; paper clips, tissue, lipsticks, glitter, you name it!

I took a short course in prosthetics creation here in the UK last year and so far I have been a prosthetics trainee on film productions and and TV shows including Game Of Thrones.
My experience so far has been amazing but I still have so much to learn. I want to be able to call myself a true makeup artist one day, and I have only scratched the surface of the industry that I so badly want to be a part of. Being able to come all the way to Los Angeles in America to learn at the prestigious Cinema Makeup School would not only be a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn fantastic skills, but would also be a dream come true.

Looking back, there are some things I’d like to improve, but overall I’m pleased with the final result and I really enjoyed making this costume, and I really hope you guys you like it. I really really REALLY hope that Cinema Makeup School will consider me for this scholarship, and I hope that it will be my chance at becoming a true makeup artist. Thank you so much for watching, lots of love from The Blue Girl!
